I then started the 'Life After 3D' web series on YouTube to document how I move on. Its now up to 30 Episodes.

I made an entire comic (Tales from the Turf)

I was able to show the last two TV shows I worked on before my retirement, which were 'Once Upon a Time...Happily Ever After' & 'Paper Girls'

Put YouTube videos up of me playing my arrangements of:

Just a Matter of Time
Fat Bottomed Girls
When the Levee Breaks & Paint it Black
(all on slide guitar)
...along with about 3 or 4 other improvised tunes. All got decent amount of views.

Recorded a song and music video with my dad which I had wanted to do for years.

I released my next (13th) album 'The Downwards Spiral'

Made music 6 videos for the following songs from it:

Stone in my Shoe
Ed Gein's Lullaby
Death on the Streets (Tax the Rich) ...which earned me shadow bans on here and Tw*tter in less than 30 seconds (and a few other places!)
When the Day is Done
Gotta Reach the Bottom
The Incel

I put some of my music videos on TikTok and have got 33,722 combined views over the year.

The Uni course I help to teach was voted best in the country and 10th best in the world. (There is NOT just me teaching that I want to point out!)

I decided to move into editing in the New Year.

Life on the personal front has been hard, with my mother now in a care home and her health not being good & my dad being far more frail these days as well.

I am hoping that 2023 at least is less stressful so I can stop being eternally grumpy due to dealing with the real life stuff.Wayne Robsonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17943079944584043618noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3314134756202310209.post-2374905876965629152022-09-22T08:45:00.002-07:002022-09-22T08:45:36.712-07:00My Last work I did in 3D - Part Two: Paper Girls (Amazon Prime)
Right boys & girls its time to show the very last 3D project I worked on before being forced to retire from 3D professionally!

This is the giant flying city / space ship thing from the Amazon Prime TV series 'Paper Girls' that I did for Refuge VFX. For this I was modelling from a concept that had been done by my good friend Neil Blevins, so it was rather fitting that I was working from one of his concepts on what would be my last pro 3D modelling gig.

You can see it in shot at the very end of the reel at this link for Refuge VFX's work on Paper Girls.

YOU CAN SEE THE VIDEO AT THIS LINK (as it will not let me embed it)

I modelled and textured the entire flying city including interiors for the main hero 'cell block'. Lets just say it took a fair old while to model the entire thing. As the poly count, well... it could have gotten WAY out of control real fast, I had to take care to use my experience to model only to a level that was required and certainly not 'over model' and throw polygons at it like they were going out of style. But this was still a HEAVY model.

It was modelled in 3Ds max, which funnily enough was the application that I started my profesoinal career in...so that was rather fitting.

I've included just grey shaded stilll here, as you can see the textured final asset in the reel linked above.

I also modelled the rooms for the hero cell block that you can see below. This was then baked down to a OSL parallax shader. Now I've had a question already on facebook about this. As someof you will know, parallax window shaders do not handle odd shapes well, and this has a small door on teh back wall with two walls at 45 degrees. So let me copy and paste my reply regarding this:

"I came up with a very low tech way of doing it (due to the fact at that point I knew my hands were getting to the 'too far gone ' stage and desperately wanted to finish this and not let Fred and the rest of Refuge down). So I came up with a low tech way, as usually room parallax shaders do not like none rectangular room shapes... so I worked out a way to do other shapes...

Luckily it worked. Once you work out HOW the shaders work its much easier to make them your bitch lol. In this case it was working out how it pulled stuff and form where on a texture UV layout and creating a camera layout that allowed me to bake what i needed."

Big thanks to Fred Ruff & the whole crew at Refuge VFX for making my final gig such and awesome one.

So thats it peeps! As I've not been in teh habit of posting on here for ages, I thought I'd better get back into it once more.

The YouTube series of mine 'Life After 3D' is still going strong, and ther has been very little actual improvement in my life since having to sto being a professoinal 3D artist. Who knows, maybe I'll start doing a proper comic or graphic novel or two if all else fails.

You are going to want to open these images up to their full size to read them properly.

I have had to come to the very difficult decision to leave the world of 3D on a professional level a month back.

The short version is this is for health reasons and the choice has been somewhat taken out of my hands. No pun intended! I have irreversible nerve damage in my right hand.

So, while I will continue to teach and be able to do ‘some’ 3D stuff, I won't be able to continue doing the vast majority of what makes me money.

Here is a playlist of the YouTube series I am doing as a result called 'Life After 3D', where I try to both cover the things behind it all as well as ways you can protect yourself from ending up in a similar rsituation...and also covering things like how to create a passive income to protect you should the worst happen.

Now for some background.

I will let you in on a secret only a very small number of people have known about and have kept for me for a long time.

About 15-17 years ago I came down with a bad case of carpal tunnel syndrome in both hands. It got so bad that the only route left open to me was to have an operation on both hands. But as my father had the exact same operation on both of his hands and they were never quite the same again (and for an artist and musician the ability to control your hands to a fine level is essential), so I didn’t have the operation. Added to this my son had just been born and I didn’t think I could justify not being able to help out much post operation.

So (and my ex Kat can attest to this), I found work arounds. You name it, I tried it as a work around. From alternating between working on site at jobs that were pretty intensive on my hands with ones that were less so (thus explaining the weird trajectory of my 27 year career!)

So, even by the time anyone had heard of me as a 3D artist my hands were already pretty screwed, but I plugged away and found ways to lessen the effects in the short and medium term.

However, what happens if you do not have treatment or the operation and have carpal tunnel syndrome, is that you end up with irreversible nerve damage, which is what I now have in my right hand. It cannot be solved or rewound back…only potentially stabilised. But the kicker is with covid-19 meaning a lot of appointments for operations etc have been delayed in some cases for years or simply not existing… The chances of even that (even if I chose to go ahead with it) are pretty slim.

About a year or two back I noticed my hand was getting worse and through resting it when not working managed to keep going, however, last summer I noticed things had started to get far worse. So I cannot in all good conscience work as a paid 3D artist on most jobs. My hands will now only continue to get worse and I have to preserve what use I have left in my right hand as much as I can.

As being a 3D artist is such a massive part of my life and who I perceive myself to be, it's pretty gut wrenching to be honest. I will still be able to teach and do bits and pieces in my spare time, but working these days for any more than about 2-3 hours with my hands ends up causing me epic amounts of pain, so even that will be thin on the ground.

So what do I do now to make ends meet? The only two things I have ever been good at are 3D art and music. Being a musician as many know is basically having a giant money pit that you throw money into…. It's not a way to become rich. So although I have a few potential ideas, none would solve the problem of no income in the short term.

I find it ironic as from a purely knowledge and experience level my mind is still as sharp as a razor and I have 27 years of amazingly varied experience, just I now have very few ways left in which to use that.

My career has seen me go from a no one in the arse end of north east rural England to working at top firms in TV, Films and computer games and doing some rather important jobs. I’ve worked on all sorts of projects (only about 25% of them I was ever allowed to mention as is usually the way).

I have met some amazing people and many of whom I still count as very good friends. An astronauts helmet I made turned out to be for a Sodastream advert shown at halftime during the Superbowl. I rediscovered my love of 3D and sculpting for fun once more and ended the year by finding out a show I had worked on in 2019 ended up the most watched TV Show on Netflix in June (Floor Is Lava). So all in all, although there has been no 'proper' paid 3D work in this year its been pretty decent really!

Feburary:

It turned out a freelance gig I did making a space helmet ended up in a Sodastream advert shown during halftime at the Superbowl of all places. I also recorded 12 other songs and have 3 music videos ready for the album I intend to release next year. I also did a video cover version of The Prodigy's 'Invaders Must Die' as a metal song..(that will not be oon the album by the way, that was just me messing about.) I also for the 1st time put in place some fucking quality control in my output, and stopped putting stuff out that had dodgy takes or that wasn't 99% correct or finished from august onwards. But you won't really see the fruits of that till 2021.

2020 was a big year for me musically, as many of you know I play many instruments, I am classicaly trained and although you may not see the music side of me as the Wayne you know, it predates it by a very looong time. The biggest thing muscially to come out of 2020 was the fact I stopped rushing things out when they were less than the way I wanted and took my time with things until I deemed them 99% the way I wanted them.

Most of them best music I have recorded this year you will hear in 2021 when I plan on releasing my 1st commercial album since 2015.

But musicaly it started with me recording a cover version of a song written in 1930 by blues legend Blind Willie Johnston called 'John the Revelator'. I made a music video to accompany it during lockdown back in March to help keep sane and give me something to do (as there has been zero 3D work in this year at all). Since releasing that on Youtube back in late March I do want to redo it again to bring it up to my new quality control standards for my music.

Then a week later I recorded and released another song and music video called St James Infirmary Blues (a very old song with no discernable author.) Again, this will also be getting a redo in the new year to bring it up to my new quality control standards for my music. The video was cobbled together from various publlic domain black and white film footage.

April saw me release the instrumental track of my own, 'Locked Up, Down, in and Out'. Again with a music video I had cobbled together while sitting here at home using only what I had on my drives.

July I released an original song I had wrote and recorded called 'Racists, Liars & Theives' . The song was wrote back at the very end of 2019, but due to its political nature I never recorded it or put it out until this year. I still stand by every single word of it, and I am rather proud of the video I managed to come up with.

August I was asked to play my resonator I had Matt Connor over at Steel Town Music in my home town customise for me. Many people didn't realise that the entire 1st lockdown was spent improving my slide playing (which had always been rather ropey until then.) After spending a year doing a gig with Blues slide guitar genius Gypsy Dave Smith every monday I had picked up a fair few things and I sat, tuned every guitar in the house to Open D (I have a LOT of Guitars) and refused to tune them back to normal until I had mastered slide playing in Open D...and it worked.

November I started a new channel called 'Skint Musician Reviews' to review music equipent people can actualy afford, not asperational shite. I did a couple of animated cartoon videos on it on a few theory things as well. But in th new year after taking a 2 month break, I will be going back to it, but its going to change..and its going to change drastically.

Mainly as I am sick trying to play along with the YouTube algorithm games and being Mr Nice and Smiley person. Thats not who I am... there wil be swearing, there will be grumpiness and on I will not be forced to follow Youtubes release schedule of at least 1 video a week.

It will be done in my time, in my way as to be honest its never going to be a big famous channel and its never going to make so much as a bean let alone any money at all. It'll turn into me having fun and keeping myself sane.

In December I rediscovered the mix I did for a heavy metal version of The Prodigy's 'Invaders Must Die' that I had lost back in 2014 before ever finishing it, alas I didn't have the original takes only the fully mixed track minus the guitars. But I finished it off for 'shits and giggles'. Just to be clear...this will NOT be on the upcoming album. It was only for fun.

But 2021 will see the release of my next album, and the tracks I have so far (about 12 of them) which I am VERY proud of. It doesn't have a name as yet but one name I was considering was 'The Haynes Guide to Wayne Robson' based on a crazy fake Haynes manual I made when I was bored. But chances are that title will now change. But keep an eye out for it....

Wayne Robsonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17943079944584043618noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3314134756202310209.post-31747913310965416042020-12-27T07:54:00.005-08:002020-12-27T10:21:16.537-08:00Breakdown: Floor is Lava (Top Netflix show for June 2020)

Back in 2019 I worked on a brand new show called 'Floor is Lava'. I had no idea it had ever saw release, let alone be the top Netflix show of June 2020 until about a month back! I worked on this freelance for a fairly long time so prepare thy selves for many images! This is gonna be a loooooong post.

So what was I responsible for?

My job was to recreate (after it had all been filmed and sets taken down), the entire sets and every item within them. match lighting , surface types, model them, texture them and extend the sets for the 3D camera moves. The lava itself I wasnt responsible for (although I did provide a basic simulation to the team working on that. Basically if its a shot without people in it, then there is about a 99% chance my work is there, this also covers the animations travellig down the ductwork etc)

...And as for the stuff I've mentioned?....I was the only guy working on that. This was a full 'balls to the wall' workflow to get things done on time to the right quality. My job was not to make the rooms or items within gthem look better than their real life counterparts, but to match them exactly as much as possible and crank through them at (to be frank) an insane speed.

Each item also had to be as low res as possible, my entire workflow was done in 3Ds Max and then had to be converted over to be rendered eventually through Cinema 4D. Now as any 3D person knows , the various media and entertainment applications from different software vendors do not always play nicely with each other. so after lighting and setting up shaders and materials for everything, I then had to run each one through some mathematical algebra to convert the lights so that they would look exactly the same when rendered from Cinema 4D as they did in 3Ds Max.

The Workflow

Ok this might get a bit long.

Basically just befoer the sets were torn down (which were filmed in an old IKEA I belive) numerous photos were takne in the hopes of using them to create a photogrammetry scan of the sets. This worked however, the scans were in no way usable for the purpose other than as lighting, shape and texture references. So after some tests to see if they could be fixed, the only decision was to recreate every single set and item within them manually.

My workflow as to bring in a polyreduced versionof the scan (using my old App I wrote years back ReDucto, which still works better than anything else out there BTW) and use that as a reference while modelling and sculpting each item.

I would then texture each item and set up the materials for them. Then once each set was done, a far lower still polycount version was made for the 'grid' version you see in the animations.

For the set extensions together with the director, we both worked dout some basic ideas for a single room shape that could be reused with some very basic set dressing. As these wouldn't be visisble very much and blurred a fair old bit with depth of field in composite, they didn't need to be too fantastically perfect. We cut as many corners as we could while keeping things looking to the right level to enable the show to get out of the door on time and on budget.

Below you can see various renders (at half HD resoltuion as they were only tests) from various stages of the work on each room. Two rooms it seems didnt make it to series One, so I'll keep those back until they appear (I am assuming ) in Series 2. I think given its massive sucess its pretty much a given that a 2nd series will be made! But I now nothing for certain on that front, and I am only guessing here.

What was it like to work on Floor is Lava?

This was a perfect example of how freelancers should be brought in, but also treated. I had a great time working for them, and it seems they with me. We gelled well together and payment was always on time. They gave me freedom in areas I knew a lot about and took on board any areas I saw a potential problem at a future point in the pipeline. It was certainly hectic though! As in an ideal world you would have had about 4-8 people working on this, but as I am known to be able to work fast an acccurately I got the job done, with minimal stress to the satisfaction of all concerned.

They even set me a Floor is Lava hat and top over as thank you.

Images Disclaimer

What you see here are raw renders from various stages in the post production process with no depth of field, and a very basic red shader applied to the 'Lava' for the purposes of visualisation purposes during post production. So as things work wise on the 3D front has been like the grave since COVID-19 I've decided to branch out into other areas.

Now before the 3D grapevine gets going (because people never let a thing like facts get in the way of a good rumour), No I am NOT leaving 3D. I'm still doing 3D and will be recording some tutorials fairly soon. Although I have a feeling work will not pickup until fiarly late on next year.

But to keep myself from going nuts due to lack of work I needed to find a area to focus my efforts on. I started playing guitar aged about 6, and I am 49 now. I've been doing 3D for wellover 25 years, so it is natural to me to branch out in that direction.

So if you could subscribe to the new channel to help it get going and gain some traction that'd be cool. I know many 3D artists are also musicians as well.

The main ethos behind this channel is a simple one.

Most of the reviews of muscial equipment are what I term 'aspirational reviews' of stuff 90% of musicians cannot afford. No one reviews the lower end less expensive stuff for the normal musican. So hence 'Skint Musician Reviews'! The logos used are based on cheap UK supermarkets such as Lidl, Tesco and Poundland as I found the idea quite humourous.

My aim is to keep improving the production quality and keep it as high as I can and make sure that even if your not a muscian that you'll find them entertaining. So I'll embed a few of the videos below.

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; I seriously cannot reccomend them enough! The tone is straight into the shops amp with whatever settings the last person left on it and whatever acoustic tone the cameras mic picked up. It is literally impossible to make this guitar sound bad when you play it.
I'll be recording some videos with a few more 'complex' pieces being played on it once I have a few moments here at home with my studio setup. we kept it to simple stuff for the benifit of those who didnt have braod musical knowledge lol. This is a highly political song that I sat on for 10 months since I 1st wrote it last October, before recording last week. I am quite aware some may not like the political themes in this video one bit and that it may even cost me some friends. So I really was in two minds about releasing it, but in my opinion in the end was that any musican who is afraid to stand up for what they believe in is no musician at all. But to be 100% clear: I stand by every single word in this song.

But please bare in mind that while it may pertinent for other countries, it was wrote primarily about the british political system and right leaning media over here. Where the right of the political system and media have shouted down anything in the middle ground or the left side of politics for years. When in reality all sides are used in a political game, because nothing fears politicians (of any side) more than a united populous.

Gear used:

Faith Venus acoustic,
Gretsch Alligator resonator
An Old bass I bought for £20 years back
C1 condenser mic
recorded on a Boss BR800 digital 8 track and mixed and mastered in Reaper.

The slide guitar tone waas got in a rather roundabout way. I 1st miked it up using my condenser mic (I would have also used my SM57 but I only have one mic stand lol.) then I added to this in reaper a MXR dynacommp, 2 delays and reverb. This gives it a slightly 50's style, slighty overdriven sound.

The acoustics were double tracked with one being a direct out from the guitar to a Fishman preamp and the ther being from the condenser mic. Vocals, all the harmonies etc were recorded seperately as I didn't want it to sound 'too perfect' using a plugin.... and of course no autotune. The harmonies were actually an accident as I did 6 vocal takes and while producing and mastering it had a thought 'I wonder what it sounds like with all 6 voices!' I quite liked it but didn't want it over the entire tune so kept it to a few select areas.

Vocally this is the 1st time I've done any singing since March so my voice is a bit rougher round the edges than it used to be.

All guitars were tuned to open D by the way.

So what is it about?

Well.... its pretty straight forward (and a side note if you are politically on the right and find the content offensive...good.... its a good job you didn't hear the 1st version I wrote back in October then...as it was FAR more biting.) It basically is pointing out here in the UK the huge right wing media bias and the fact that people are being lied to every day to keep people at each others throats. To keep tyinto make racism acceptable. Personally I don't trust any politician (no matter what flavour) as they are all either racists, lairs or thieves (hence the title). It also touches on the fact that just because a voice is loud, does not make it correct.

The video was done with some long hours in after FX as I wanted to try and do something different for this one (plus the kenitic type idea may end up being the default for any future music videos so you don't have to look at my ugly face.)

Now I have that song out of my system I can move onto my next one waiting to be recorded...... not political in any way...but all kinds of fucked up shit in the lyrics lol.

Also every time I put out a sculpt like this where I play with and break human proportions people seem to hate it lol. ...this is 20 plus years...So yes his nose is suposed to be too big and his eyes are supposed to be too far up the head etc

.. and this is for over 20 plus years...So yes his nose is suposed to be too big and his eyes are supposed to be too far up the head etc, those are not mistakes, those were preplanned. ;)

Its finally done!

My re-design of the World of Warcraft Voidwalker.

There were so many times I nearly gave up on this one.... I decided to redo the entire environment of the scene yesterday at the 11th hour as I wasn't happy with the one I had spent a week making. This is the heaviest scene I've done in quite a few years... 65 million polys in the 3Ds Max viewport and pushed 3Ds Max and my machine to its very limit. There were a few times I was convinced smoke was going to pour out any second lol.

All textures were handpainted. Hand sculpted (ie no use of brusshes, stencils etc) in a combination of Mudbox & Zbrush, rendered in 3Ds Max 2020 using VRay and Phoenix for the smoke and fire.

So I'm having a day or 3 off before going to complete another model of mine I've had sitting half done for the last week.

I was going to wait until tomorrow to post this so it didnt get lost ... but though 'screw it'. I've enclosed a few untextured renders for you guys as well.

This is a little cartoony style nonsense I've been messing around with between sessions working on the Voidwalker. Anyone who knows me, know I hate doing hair (which is why 99% of my sculpts have no hair). Mainly as I've never found a solution that I felt comfortable with. However that seems to have changed with Ornatrix. The model is rendered in 3Ds Max with V-Ray & Ornatrix for hair.

The actual model was also animated (not that I can afford a render farm to render it out mind you!) But basically its a little bit of something different from the uual monsters, creatures and envirnoments from me.Wayne Robsonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17943079944584043618noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3314134756202310209.post-32416175054152302092020-05-06T12:09:00.002-07:002020-05-06T12:09:29.344-07:00The Watcher

So as I now finally have my 'mojo' back creativly after 7 or 8 years of dry spell, I tought I would drag out this model from about 8 or so years back that never got textured. So I hand painted all the textures and created the scene and lit it (in VRay in 3Ds Max BTW) in 23 hours... not 23 hours straight you undertand! Thats including sleep and meals and looking after y daughter and stuff lol

Its a 4k PBR texture set, SSS skin shader and te hair (which you can barely see) isn't hair at all but geo /splines as I was lazy and I REALLY HATE doing hair in any 3D package lol.

yes...there iwll be more models /renders etc but I'm going to have a day or 2 off 1st. BTW I will also be taking part in Autodesk's 'Meet the Experrts' over on the area on Thursday 7th May (tomrrow at the time or writing.)Wayne Robsonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17943079944584043618noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3314134756202310209.post-63815922953086290852020-05-06T12:03:00.000-07:002020-05-06T12:03:03.073-07:00World of Warcraft Voidwalker redesign (teaser)

I'm on doing a personal redesign of the Voidwalker from World of Warcraft (wehich is keeping me sane during lockdown on an evening). Here's a quick render of it.

All textures are hand painted. I'll add another more detailed post when I am finished. I still have some shader tweaks to do and the final ighitng/ scene (which this isnt). I've also had a request from someone at Epic Games to stick it in UE4 as well (so that is now on my todo list. AlthoughI should add thhis request was in a personal capacity from them.)Wayne Robsonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17943079944584043618noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3314134756202310209.post-28912318634195866932020-04-28T10:01:00.000-07:002020-04-28T10:02:37.698-07:00New music video: Locked Up, Down, In & Out

So yep a third music video for a song, this time one I wrote myself. All instruments are played by me, recorded by me, mixed by me and the music video is by... yes you guessed it! By me! LOL (Not that there is a lot of options while in lockdown on day 32.)

Every shot in this video has a meaning, it contains a complex puzzle... as a clue keep an eye on the doors and windows (and maybe a few other things). There may also be a couple of bits where I take a sideways glance at the world. It concerns where we are as a world right now and where we may end up if we are not very, VERY careful.

It sounds deceptively easy to play when in actuality it was a massive pain in the arse. Originaly the 12 string was in an Open C tuning... but that was near impossible to play with by any of the other instruments they way I wanted them to sound. So I changed the whole thing to an Open D tuning.... 1st take of the 12 string was spot on...but matching to it was NOT easy at all.

It went through a weird journey really... it started out sounding like Led Zep 3 area Led Zeppelin...then morphed into late 80's Bon Jovi...then back into a Led Zep thing...the Hurdy Gurdy drone note was added at the very last minute as I felt it was missing something, but wasn't sure what. Then insperation struck.

For those interested in the specifics the instruments used were:

A Hurdy Gurdy I 'borrowed' from my brother about 6 months back and never returned

A 12 string hand made Jim Deacon 12 string acoustic guitar

A 6 String Faith 'Naked' Venus 6 string acoustic

An Ozark Mandolin

All were recorded using a C1 condenser mic. The whole thing was done as usual on a budget of nothing using only what I had lying around on drives etc.

I am also sculpting again 'for me' for the 1st time in anout 7 or so years with any enthusiasm! I promise I will show some of the stuff I've been sculpting 'just for me' (ie not for clients) soon.

Well here's another music video. This time I knocked it up in 6 hours yesterday using a load of public domain footage. Now as a disclaimer, if I wasn't in lockdown (and actually had a small budget for this) this would have been done a LOT differently. It was hard as hell trying to maintain a cohesive narrative structure to the video on this one using only what was public domain.... I think its doing fine till just before the halfway point if I was cirtisising myself on this.

It's a very old song that has no discernable author although it 1st surfaced in about 1929 having been coverd by Louis Armstrong, Cab Calloway and even Hugh Laurie. I have changed a number of the lyrics and all instruments, vocals recording, production and editing is mine.

I personally think its a bit weaker than John the Revelator I put up the other day, but I am working within some pretty heavy restraints on these. (Hey! Least I'm being honest!) So will I do yet another one? Well to be honest I have nothing planned and it would ean going back over the hundreds of songs I've recorded over the last 30 odd years.

Basically it depends how bored I get.....

Wayne Robsonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17943079944584043618noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3314134756202310209.post-40092048388410240772020-03-28T06:13:00.001-07:002020-03-28T06:32:10.278-07:00Making a Music Video in Less Than 48 hours (Covid-19 Lockdown)

So it seems the whole world is on lockdown in our houses. No doubt we are all getting to the stage where we need to keep ourselves amused. I can't really record any tutorials as my daughter (who is 11) is also on lockdown and I'm pretty sure none of you want hear her playing 'Baby Shark' in the background of paid tutorials. So that side is on hold for the current time until the Coronavirus passes over.

Some of you may know that outside of the 'day job' I'm also a musician and composer and play a lot of instruments and studied music theory and compositiong as well as musical production. I've also been playing guitar since I was 6 (so thats 43 years coming up). I very rarely mix my day job and my music. One reason is that I don't feel comfortable spending a shit pile of money to render stuff out for it.

So......

I decided a couple of days ago to take one f the songs I recorded last year and make a music video for it. The catchs were that:

I'm on lockdown so no videoing things outside.

It must use only what I have available on my hard drives.

It must cost me nothing (Because like the rest of people who freelance I'm currently not working and bleeding money).

All footage thats new must be shot on my phones camera (as I sold my broadcast quality ones a couple of years back as I needed the money to live).

No footage can be 'stolen' at all.

It has to be produced only on a single machine with no render farms.

While it says on the video it took less than 48 hours, the actual figure is well under 36 hours from top to bottom. Now I'm the 1st to admit it won't win any awards but it kept me amused for a couple of days. If I had time and a budget theres a lot of it I would change.

It my version of a song written in 1930 by blues legend Blind Willie Johnston called 'John the Revelator'. ...and yes that is me singing...no I didnt use autotune.

I've repurposed some VFX 3D stuff I did years back and also (for the very astute) some clips from my aborted short film ‘Of Gods and Men’ thats not seen the light of day since 2011. Now I've covered that whole debacle many times so I don't need to go over it again. But I have to admit it was nice to finally be able to find a use for some of the plates I did for that.

Ok now to the music side.

Instruments:

Acoustic Guitars: Faith Naked Venus & Fishman Platinum Pro Acoustic preamp

Mandolin: Ozark Custom

Bass: A cheap bass I bought for £50 years back with VERY old strings.

Microphone: C1 Condenser mic

Mandolin Pickup / Mic: Joe Myers ‘The Feather’ & Fishman Platinum Pro Acoustic preamp

The DAW I used was Reaper by the way with various plugins for compressors etc and EQ's with the video editing done with a mix of Premier and After FX (not for any weird reason other than it worked faster that way in this case.)

So there you go...... done in less than 36 hours with zero budget while on lockdown. Imagine what I could do if I had an actual budget PMSL.

A funny story about all this:

Now you may notice in places the vocalsync is out...there is a funny story about that!

I was working away and thought ‘ fuck ....this music needs a bit of work!'.

So I went to sort it out , only to realise I had been working on a very old demo version I recorded back in november and not the final version. Now at this point the video was nearly done, so I had to re-edit as best I could to the new version and replace the audio. That is why some of the vocal sync is out... as its synced to a different version of the track lol.

So will I do another one?

well..... I'd like to yes, I do have another track done at the same time last year that I rather like, but getting a video to fit that would be a far bigger endeviour. So in that case I may have to see who I know who has footage in an 1920/30's/40's style ideally with old hospitals in it. But we'll see.... It depends how bored I get really.

Today I release a new commercial tutorial. It covers how to create a landscape Auto Material in Unreal Engine 4. Once your done, you will have a material that will automaticaly place your textures and foliage without the need for painting layers. While it can use textures created from Either World Machine or Gaea, the examples shown here are only using the height map for the landscape.

It is available in two versions, one with, and one without the project files. There will be a follow up to this in a month or two taking things to a different stage, where this will be required viewing. It is also the 1st time in over 20 years I have done a video that gives you homework at the end. ;)

So I did a bit of work on the Sodastream advert that was shown at the Superbowl. I worked on the helmets, I'll not go into tooo much detail for obvious reasons. Modelled in 3Ds Max 2020 and then exported to Maya and rendered with Arnold.

...and before anyone says... why Yes it does bare a resemblance to the Film 'The Last days On Mars' I worked on back in 2012/2013 as 3D supervisor. I'll stick a few screenshots below. But remember folks.... stuff like this is a TEAM EFFORT, I'm just one tiny bit in ahuge puzzle.
So here we go in no particular order.

Still one of my favorite photos of me lecturing

My work seen at the London 2012 Olympics by a third of the planet (I will never have my work hit as many people ever again.)

Taught and lectured all over the world from Las Vegas, to Vienna Science Academy to Berlin to Iceland (the country not the supermarket lol), Sweden and beyond.

I worked at the top of the tree in both Film VFX and computer games with highlights being MPC Montreal and Rockstar North in Edinburgh. as Lead lighting artist and Senior Environment artist respectively.

I worked for 2 1/2 years for Chaos Group on the documentation for many version of VRay, responsible for a great many of the examples across multiple platforms.

I provided 46 1/2 hours of free video training (I stopped counting in 2012... so its probably a lot higher now). Released a lot of paid tutorials on subject from sculpting to environment techniques to The Unreal Engine.

I had 2 strokes, 2 complete mental breakdowns and had to deal for once with my long standing clinical depression. I did and I'm glad I managed it.

Many articles for trade magazines (I used to enjoy writing them until the mudbox star started to lower in the sky.)

Wrote all sorts of apps and plugins with the most famous being MudWalker which was then cloned a million times often by people who didnt realise where it started (and its now a standard feature in most workflows.) Shame I never made a penny from it lol. Also my app Reducto which I've had in mothballs now for a number of years. There was also of course the vector displacement shader I wrote....and so many scripts etc for clients and places I've worked

You name it and I've probably sculpted it or modelled it at some point for a client. Although I sculpt a lot less thee days and not as a rule for 'fun' as I used to.

my 'crazy expreiments' such as project sureat and the facial mocap system I made were all fun and cutting edge at the time.

Done all sorts of stuff for clients all over the world in all sorts of fields fom medicine to film, games to architecture and just about everything its possible to make a 3D model for or light or render .

I released a shit pile of albums in the 2010's. Before this the last albums I'd put out were in the early 90's. I've put out 7 from 2012, with a classical album I've been working on since 2012 and a few others 'in the pipe'.

Worked on films (more than I can say due to NDA's) and a fair bit of TV stuff (with another debuting in the new year).

I made the animated short 'Monsters!' in June 2013 on a single machine. It had a somewhat heavy message.

I got married.

I killed off my sucessful YouTube series of 'Waynecasts'. Mainly as the exagerated version of me in the videos was getting mixed up for the real me. I often think about resurrecting them in some way.

7.8 million views on videos of mine on Youtube and Vimeo.

I started painting on canvas again and have sold my paintings to a few countries. It provides a nice balance to the art I did in the digital world. I still take on commissions

I wrote and relased a mobile game in a single day when I ws bored. Called Flappy Dildo (a rip off of flappy birds) it was released and banned from the Google Play Store in less than an hour. Something I am strangely proud of lol.

I went from just playing guitar to playing, mandolin, Banjo, Piano, Bass, Ukelele, 3 and 4 string cigar box guitar and I'm currently learning another instrument. I find it keeps my brain sharp.

I released the Nuke for 3D artists video series for free.

I've taught not only artist who woprk in the industry now, but the ones who taught the guys that taught them. I've helped form 3D courses at various universities over the years... which isnt bad for a numpty from Consett.

I've lived in more countries than I care to count for work with notable entries being Montreal, Dublin & Edinbugh.

I've been doing 3D now for about 25 years (ish) which is more than half my life. Somehow I am still not a millionaire lol

I've done more models and speed sculpts than I care to count.

I wrote for a long time under my pen name on subjects outside of 3d and art and made quite a name for myself until I stopped. I plan on starting again.

There's probably a million things I am missing out here.... but not too bad really. Lets see what (if anything) I achieve in the next ten years. I honestly have no clue what ahead or any big masterplan other than keep enjoying what I do and try to make enough to eat and buy musical instruments etc.
<span style="color: white; font-family: "arial";">WARNING: Everything written here is my opinion only and in no way reflect the opinions or views of any companys I have worked for past or present.
The last 10 years...
This is the longest blog post I have ever written. So make yourself a coffee and sit back, and just a warning.... I'm going deep on this one! It's not always going to be easy or pleasant reading.
Well one things is for certain, the last decade has been a helluva ride with more ups and downs than a prostitute in a back alley lol! Now I'm going to warn you right off the bat that I am not going to be pulling any punches (either good or bad) in this review of my own personal last decade. Either about myself or the things in my life. If you'd rather have a nice fairytale view of me and my career, look away now as 'here be monsters' lol.
So new years day 2010, I was coming off the back of both the huge book I wrote on Zbrush and the Mudbox 2009 beta tester images (which as events outside my control would have it, happened to come out exactly the same damn day causing all sorts of shit for me.) I was on the start of an upswing that would last a while. My star was riding high as a result of all that, plus the Mudbox Quickstart series of free tutorials I put out, and the From the Ground Up series (and god alone knows what else). 2010 was when the lectures started. Before I knew it I was lecturing all over the world seeing places I'd never seen before.
But things did go a bit sideways. I had my 1st stroke in 2011 while in Utrecht at EUE but didn't realise it for quite some time due to being in complete denial. It took my partner at the time and my mother, father and brother to frog march me to the doctors to get it sorted about 3 weeks (ish) later, it turned out that the type of stroke I had was usually followed by a huge one about 28 days later. But good news there were meds that could stop that but they took 2 weeks to start working. Now if your maths is like mine you realise those two time lengths cause an issue. So what I had to do was to take the meds and basically spent weeks staring at an empty wall at home in a chair (all the while I had my son running around like a typical 5 / 6 year old and a new born daughter).
I was VERY VERY lucky as I made a full recovery, although it did leave me with minimal memories of the whole of the 1990's (from what I understand I didn't exactly miss much that decade lol), a terrible memory, and it took me a long time to get my skills back to where they were...and after my entire style was different, my coordination outside of art and music is epically shit now as a result.
The cause of my stroke?
That's sort of a sore point you see, because it was all my fault.
I had declared I was going to make a film quality short in 2 months on my own called 'Of Gods and Men'. The story was sound and the script worked well... however 3 weeks before I was due to debut it at EUE 2011 all my drives died along with my backup drives and I lost all my work on it.
A sensible person at this point would have thrown their hands up and walked away from it.
But I however was ANYTHING but a sensible person. Already drinking between 30 and 40 strong coffees a day and chain smoking cigarettes while I worked. I upped my hours to 20-22 hours a day. I was warned by family and friends and basically everyone I knew that this was a very bad idea. But I let my ego and 'not wanting to fail' rule things. I ended up having to cut so many corners to get it done (with just 24 hours to spare till I left for EUE 2011) I never even checked it or watched it. The 1st time I did was when it played on a big screen during EUE 2011 in the bar. I had a moment of clarity and realised it was total and utter shit. In fact no it was worse than that... it was embarrassing to watch it was so bad. I managed to take a wonderful potential idea and put out something laughable.
So I drown myself in more alcohol that night than I have drank before or since. It is this stream of events which I blame for my stroke. It worked as a cautionary tale to me to never ever let my ego be in control ever again. After that I put a limit on my hours and cut my caffeine intake down from insane levels too far more sensible ones.
Some point between 2011 and 2012 I was made the 1st ever Autodesk Master for Mudbox. This pissed some people off, but more were happy than weren't.
The slowing down that I had no choice but to do as a result of the stroke, combined with 3 very weak Mudbox releases meant my star was falling. I was earning less and less money until the start of 2012 where I had at one point 57p to my name and a family to feed.
I worked on the London 2012 Olympics opening ceremony watched by 1/3 of the planet on the Jesse Owens shot. Which I am still not allowed to show on my reel BTW lol. That one won the prize for worst working conditions of anything I ever worked on. (I can freely say this now as the company no longer exists). As I had a brand new dept head who insisted on a live stream of everything I did from 6am till 5am each morning (I was working from home). A little hint for anyone new to running a department...THIS IS NOT HOW YOU DO THINGS!
By the time the very very late payment of the invoice came I was in debt and the wage didn't even dent it. I was up shit creek without a paddle.
But sometimes life throws you a bone, and it did! Back in 2009 I'd met a guy at EUE called John O Connell, we'd had a drink and a long chat and I never thought much more about it. However John realised Screen Scene in Dublin needed someone for an upcoming feature they were about to start work on, and put my name forward. So I spent from 2012 to April (I think) 2013 working as 3D Supervisor on the Film The Last Days on Mars.
That time is without a shadow of a doubt my happiest memories of working anywhere in my life. I made many long term friends then (and also if I'm honest partied like a fucking lunatic in my off hours. But NEVER at the cost of not being able to give 100% to my job.) I wish the film had done as well as I did enjoy working on it. The work done on it was breaking all sorts of rules to get shots done on time that really weren't possible with an astounding team under me.
I have fond memories of operating 4 to 6 machines at the same time rushing between them on my office chair from one side of the room to the other like a hyperactive fraggle to meet shot deadlines. It's a bit of a shame I put my foot in it with Screen Scene a few years later (but more of that in a bit, as I am being 100% honest here as I promised... warts and all).
2013 was freelance work, more work at Screen Scene for both Ripper street series 1 (with the favorite shot I worked on of all...the fossy jaw shot) and Moonfleet. It ended with me lecturing at the Autodesk Cave Event in Las Vegas. At this point my depression was biting pretty hard, although it would get worse. Real life had not been good, with my partner at the time and myself on the verge of splitting up.
The end of the year I split up with my partner and mother of my two kids. We'd got to a critical mass point and my head space probably wasn't helping. We still remain friends to this day and there's certainly no animosity from either of us towards the other. I'm proud we handled the split like adults without the need for lawyers.
2014..... now this was an interesting year. I was newly single and had a house. I'd not really been out drinking (apart from 2 or 3 pints a week with my brother) in many years. But I freely admit I went totally fucking nuts and drank whatever wasn't nailed down. While I'm not totally proud of that part, it was pretty natural and seems to be a 'thing' a lot of blokes who find themselves single after many years do.
Money ran out again... and then fortune smiled on me once again and I ended up working for Rockstar Games in Edinburgh as a Senior Environment Artist. No I can't say what I worked on, if any of it has been released or if any of it is still to be released...ever in fact. I had a LOT of very heavy real life stuff going on at the time such as seriously ill close family members, the fact that it wasn't really the job for me coming out of years in VFX. I was paying for my flat in edinburgh, my house back in Consett and paying off my ex's debit on that house so my kids didn't end up homeless... that and a whole load of other stuff I wish I could put here but can't. (I'll let you all work out why this may be yourselves.)
I ended up stressed to fuck, my depression biting harder than ever, regularly drinking myself into nearly a coma each weekend and having my head far up my own arse. I had a 2nd mini stroke in May of 2014 that acted as another wakeup call. I've not had another since.
It was at this point I put my foot in it with Screen Scene. While I can't remember the thought process behind it (as to be honest I'm pretty sure what I experienced then was a mental breakdown), I did a 'behind the scenes' blog post on my time in Dublin. Many things were put on it that no one in their right mind would have, and to be frank I certainly wasn't in my right mind at the time. Probably the only thing keeping me from a mental ward was this wonderful lass I'd met up there called Louise. Now don't bother looking for that blog post as it was removed after many shouty phone calls inside of an hour of posting it (it's not even on the way back machine, and no I do not have a copy.) Suffice to say it was an epic fuck up caused by having way too much on my plate on the real life side of things and mental health issues. I apologised later (although this still does not excuse it at all, and it's a blemish I will carry around my whole career.) It's one of the many things I wish I could go back in time and undo.
Also around this time I nearly died due to a sudden allergy to penicillin (bearing in mind I'd taken it plenty of times when prescribed by doctors before, so it really came out of nowhere.) So here's the story of how that happened:
I had been struggling with a chest infection in Edinburgh for a while, went to the docs got prescribed pills in my dinner hour. Took 1st one when I got home while making my dinner. I'm eating my dinner and suddenly I'm covered in hives...thousands of hives! ....even in places you'd never expect hives to be.... zillions of the bastards! Then my airway started to close. I phoned 999 and wrote on a piece of paper what the pills were, when I was prescribed and had taken them etc.. and opened the front door using the button at the top of my stairs.
To cut a long story short, if there hadn't been an ambulance at the end of my road at that time (there it seems due to a prank call) I wouldn't be here now. I was rushed to hospital with an adrenaline shot to my heart. which BTW hurts like a bastard.
I woke up in A & E shaking like a leaf and feeling like death. 10 mins later this lass called Louise I'd only met a few times turns up (I'd sent her a text saying an ambulance was on the way, I thought it'd be a bit shit to go and die on someone without some sort of a warning.) Side note: Louise is now my wife :)
So 2015 rolls on, once again I am flat broke, no freelance is coming in so I went over to Montreal to work as Lead Lighting artist at MPC on the Fantastic 4 movie (now known as one of the biggest box office bombs in history, where its own director called it shit a few days before release.) I could write a book (if I was allowed) on the stuff behind the scenes on that one!
I left MPC at the end of that film as working away was pulling me apart as I had to rush home at lunch time to my wonderful flat in Montreal , ram a sarnie down my neck then skype call my kids before they went to bed. Louise would stay up till 2 or 3 in the morning to talk to me over skype after I finished work each night. I couldn't handle being that far away. So I came home and as a result defaulted on the 2 year contract and ended up with about £12k in debt.
...and with no income.
Life then started kicking me in the nuts again on the real life side and kept doing that till start of this year (but more of that later).
I ended up in early 2016 working on the documentation team for Chaos Group (who were a wonderful company to work for) and I was very sad when we were all let go 2 1/2 years later. I'd advise anyone who has the chance of working for them to grab it with both hands.
Then followed a string of freelance gigs often with large gaps between them, but usually making just enough to survive.
In 2018 Louise and I got married. Probably the one and only good thing that happened that year.
Then we get to the back end of 2018 / 2019......
My depression had hit whole new levels in 2018. I had two mental breakdowns in 3 days, tried to 'fix myself' by self medicating with insane amounts of alcohol. But nothing worked. I wasn't fixing anything.... just breaking myself in new ways. With no money coming in I settled into a routine of going to my local every night and drinking the 5 or 6 pints it took to make sure I slept that night and didn't stay awake all night worrying. My mental health was at a critical mass point and I was truly suicidal. Very few people knew how bad things really were at this time.
By the start of 2019 I was a mental mess and a total fucking car crash of a human being. It got to the point where I knew I had to get my depression sorted for once and for all before I killed myself. So I went to counselling. I was convinced it wouldn't work, that it would be total shit and a waste of my time. But I promised those around me I'd give it the best go I could....and luckily i am a man of my word.
...and it worked. Not like a magic wand being waved, but with hard work I slowly started to improve. So by May this year I was the best I'd ever been. Which was good as I'd spend from May till the start of October working on something for a production company from L.A.
So where am I now as a person, a decade older with so much experience both work wise and in life itself? My depression rarely bothers me as now I have the tools to manage it far better.
Yeah, I still have the occasional 'bad day', but they aren't on the same level as they once were. Your probably waiting for me to say I stopped drinking so they fairytale can have the perfect ending. No I haven't.... because life isnt a fucking fairy tale.
The difference these days is that I keep to my pints of John Smiths and not any crazy concoction that will get me trollied out of my head. So yep I am still a flawed artist and musician (and person), but it's those flaws that make me the artist I am.
I know many will pulll the old 'thats career suicide' trope about this article, but companies arent hiring robots, they are hiring artists who are REAL human beings with often real problems. If they cant get out of that mindset, then they are cutting out vast quantities of amazing artists who should not have to pretend everything is fine when it is not. There should be no stigma around mental health issues, especially in such a high pressure career as ours.
Hopefully the next ten years are good, with a stable income and many good memories to come. If it just has less crap going on in the real life side, that'd be cool as well lol.
