A dick around for an hour or so......

Hour and a bit dick around in 3dmax

So.... as well as having my dad in hospital, who has now had his triple bypass and so far is doing very well ( big thanks to all those who sent their good wishes) and the FXPHD Durham cathedral interior I've also had time for some dick arounds. Either for use in some cases as set dressing that I'd not be able to cover as part of the course, or in the case of the one from tonight just as some relaxation for an hour or so in 3Dsmax. I have suddenly of late had an urge to do more environment modelling, and not just because of the FXPHD course I'm teaching, but because I find it amazingly relaxing and far less pressuring than creatures or people. Mainly as with a enviro model you either get it right or wrong.

Work in progress of altar screen

Another reason is it gets me out of sculpting everything and forces me to take a break from that for a short time(which always ends up producing better work in the long run). I do find poly modelling environments easy and so low stress, it's not usually something you want to do at 600 miles an hour and so I can stop, have a coffee, take the kids to the park or whatever and come back later. I don't have to 'catch the idea' before it fades in my head.

I also want to point out that this week is your last chance to join the current term at FXPHD, there are a LOT of amazing courses on offer...and mine lol. I know it can be a lot of money, but if you added up all the hours upon hours of tuition and availability to the tutors you get its a steal. (it'd cost a shit load more if it was DVD's for example! ) So far everyone on my course has had nothing but good things to say about it, which is always a plus point. So if you are serious about making this industry your career it's a very good option to consider.

New DLSR and more Durham Cathedral stuff

I finally got a replacement for my stolen 550D back when I was at end user event (or more correctly on my way to end user event). After thinking long and hard I had narrowed it between a 60D, a &D, and a Lumix GH2. As theres not adapter for EOS lenses that works the way I wanted them to that doesn;t cost a small fortune I went for the 60D. The only reason I didn't got for the 7D was simply as it weighs a lot more. as I don't drive and hate carrying the weight of a small dead body around I went for the 60D. Why not the 5D mk2? Wel as its overdue the mk3 coming out it'd be folly to spend that much on a camera that could be outdated very fast. Plus there is a rash of other good cameras (inc the sony full frame one) due out very soon so I didn't really feel like taking a gamble.

As I'm not a fan of pixel peeping and chances of aything of mine ever being on a large projected screen are so close to zero that its thinking of it as zero it wasn't an issue to me. Although having the ability to do some good still was. I rarely use auto focus, or auto anything to be honest as it makes me feellike I know what the hell I'm doing. (Whether that be the actual case or not lol).

My dad has his triple bypass tomorrow morning so hopefully you'll all keep your fingers crossed. Its not as straight forward as it could be due to some existing health issues. Right now I'm trying not to think about it as I'd be a nervious wreck.

I did a bit of a dick around with the Durham cathedral model I'm doing for my FXPHD course I'm teaching this year, nothing major just basically to unwind, but for those interested you can see it above. Its a fair bit down the actual cathedral this time as I was getting sick of rendering long shots lol I still have the entire altar area to design as well yet.

WIP Durham Cathedral Interior

Modelling nearly done for nave, both wings and the modified altar area (as required by Mike Seymour who is art director for this), few more bits and pieces then its onto uv mapping, texturing and sculpting this. A very short blog entry today as my dad is in hospital for an emergancy heart operation so funnily enough blog posts aren't top of my adgenda today.

Durham Cathedral Interior : 'WIP 'Alternate version.

Here's a quick update to the Durham cathedral interior model that I'm covering the creation of for the FXPHD advanced interior modelling class I'm giving. This is the low res 'B' version that I'm working on in tandem. The idea behind a alternate version is that I am a bit freer to tweak things for the shot if need be.

This is the Nave only and accounts for only about 1/4 of the final model and the 'low res' is currently at 1.7 million in my 'B' version shown here. (There will also be a far higher res 'C' version if I can get it all to render lol.) This is all pre sculpting and lights at the moment are a simple stand in. Remember folks this is a work in progress (i.e. unfinished) and subject to some rather dramatic changes.

Also I have just stuck my PROSKAR anamorphic lens, complete with clamps and doipters up on ebay as I don't have a dslr at this time. This lens is a great example of the PROSKAR anamorphic lens and if your into dslr filming I strongly recommend looking at it (although I would say that woudn't I? lol). It also means you'll be able to get nearly a 4k wide image out of you DSLR ;)
It breaks my heart to have to sell it.

'Order 13' ... (or Outside the Comfort Zone)

The idea behind 'Order 13' is that the world of digital art and expecially 3D is seen by outsiders to be simply 'pressing a few buttons' and requiring little to no skill at all on our part. Now as the guys and girls at the sharp end we know this is utter rubbish, But it inspired the whole concept behind 'Order 13'.

The concept is a simple one, for one day you forget all about the app or apps you are comfortable with and probably know inside out and have used for ages and instead pick its polar opposite you dont use and do a piece in that instead. Now as I use a combo of Mudbox and 3D Max the opposites of those would be Zbrush and Maya. The idea is to not only sort of say to people who think all we do is press buttons ' hey we do do more than just press smegging buttons all day', but also to stretch ourselves outside of our nice warm comfort zones just a little and make life more uncomfortable for us.

It is the artist that creates the art, not the application.

So I thought I'd start off by putting my money where my mouth was and picking up an app that I haven't used on a project or for a personal piece since 2008...Zbrush. To compound matters I set myself the task of recreating the head of the Lion from the KMBA productions logo and animation I did. So I spent an hour on it and here it is. It meant for this piece changing the way I was used to sculpting to get it to look the way I wanted. Obviously it sort of goes without saying that you wouldn't want to do this for a production peice lol. But if I dont say it then someone no doubt willl take it as that being what I actually meant, so sorry for stating the bleeding obvious.

This does not mean I have changed apps...that is not the point of Order 13. I also realise judging on past times I've even mentioned zbrush that this is sort of taking a bit of a risk. As very small minority of the less glued together zb users seem to take a rather bizaar extreme exception to me even uttering the name lol. (I have had emails that'd make anyones hair curl over the years.....one day I'd love to publish the whole damn lot on a dedicated site. lol). But as I never tell anyone what apps they are allowed to use, you can guess what my view on other people attempting to tell me what to use or not use is. ;)

But I digress.... Which I admit I do have a habit of doing rather often. Give the idea behind 'Order 13' a go.... step outside that comfort zone and stretch ....or you could just forget all about it and stay in the confines of a nice comfortable place your in. To me, being an artist is never about being 'comfortable, but rather finding new and intersted ways to make myself uncomfortable and stretch myself. But granted thats not for everyone.

'What Remains'

Another of my many partly done sculpts brought to some semblance of completion last night. Render took an absolute age with all those final gather bounces to help it look nice.

The name does have a reason and meaning but its sort of private and I only mention it is because if I don't then some bugger will ask why its called that. Its breaks teh old creature /monster rule of making sure it looks at least something like something living or known facially. It doesn't. (Which is one of the reasons I originally mothballed it.)

Edgar Alan Poe Sculpt

I started this sculpt back in about april this year and it got mothballed for no other reason than being too busy to finish it. So there poor old poe stood on my drive with no hair for months along with about 70 other partly done models from april and march.

Unlike the others (as I often produce far more than I ever finish when working just for something for me) a little voice said to finish him off. So I did. Maybe I should dig around and see what else I feel like finishing off at some point. I'd love to get this one 3d printed just for my own amusement and to stick on my desk. I've always had a soft spot for caricatures.

On a side note I finally offically handed over ownership of mudboxhub.com yesterday, so its no good sending me emails about it as I no longer run it. This along with stopping the free tutorials and dvd's has taken a fair old bit of stress off my shoulders.

FXPHD: MOD301 week 2: advanced enviroment modleing

Well its back down to work on the stuff for FXPHD now for the MOD301 advanced environment modelling course I'm the professor for. As luck would have it the version I recorded at 3am this morning was corrupted by Camtasia...which is nice of it I think you'll agree! So it was all hands to the pumps tonight to redo it in time to meet the deadline, so yet another working till tomorrow to get the final edit etc done and ready.

This is going to be one helluva detailed cathedral interior as Durham Cathedral itself is insanely detailed in places. The full low res will be about a million polys or so...I remember when low poly meshes were a couple of hundred lol. Although to be fair this is going nowhere near a game engine and is intended to fit a series of chroma shots. So it has to stand up to photoreal quality.

It's not exactly giving away a lot to say that anything repeated is instanced, although interestingly enough many things in Durham aren't repeated and are unique. Which provides its own set of challenges. The students are going to have a lot of fun when it comes time to sculpt and texture this. The plus point for me is that I get to show I can indeed make stuff other than monsters, plus as I've ben visiting the cathedral itself since I was 5 year old, it'll be nice to have a 3d version. There's about a 99% chance that once the course is done that I'll continue on with the set dressing and other stuff that's not needed for this as it is not seen in the shots. I'm enjoying myself immensely.

In other news, my wife and I went to the cinema for the first time together, which as we've been together 9 years may sound odd. But as with a lot of you who read this blog, work often gets in the way of real life, so I simply haven't had the time to take her till today. (Plus once kids came along we had a whole other set of reasons why it was far more difficult to get to see a film together as baby sitters are a bit thin on the ground lol. We went to see the deathly hallows part 2 as we both like harry potter...in a non weird 'it's a decent series of books' non scary way. It gets a 9 1/2 out of 10 from me and the wife.

Need some advice from photography peeps

OK Photography type peeps, I need some advice. Looks like I may have to sell enough of the list below to buy a replacement camera for my one stolen in Holland as otherwise this stuff is just sitting around doing sod all. So need some advice about what makes the most sense to sell (ie getting rid of minimum ammount of stuff so I can buy a replacement 550d or a 60D).

I could probably pair down my stuff pretty much to a couple of lenses (as I dont use the zooms at all) and the stuff I've not put on this list like reflectors, tripods, mini chroma rig etc..... Bt ideally would like to A: get rid of shit I'd not use even with another camera...and B: ideally have enough to possibly upgrade

Basically I need some advice as god damnit I need a DSLR!

The List:

Canon zoom lens EF 100-300mm 4.5-5.6
Canon zoom lens EF 75-300mm 4-5.6
Canon zoom lens EF 28-80mm 3.5-5.6
Canon zoom lens EFS 18-55mm 3.5-5.6
Ensinor 24mm 2.8
Helios 58mmF2
Ziess Jena 50mm 2.8
Tokina SD 28-70mm 3,5-4.5 (with FD to EOS Adapter)

Captains log....Stardate: Who Gives a Shit

I'm feeling a bit under the weather at the moment so excuse my somewhat piss take title for this article....plus couldn't think of another one I liked better lol. I've got a couple of bits and pieces of news / clarification I want to pass on to do with Mudboxhub and the hundreds of hours of vids I've put out for Mudbox.

If my tone seems abrupt in this post it's down to me feeling like 7 kinds of shit right now, plus for some stuff there is no easy way to say it.

1st Up Mudbox Hub:

From some point next week Mudboxhub will be changing hands outside of my control. I'm handing it over to someone else to run and maintain as I simply don't have the time any more to spend on it. Autodesk were given 1st refusal on it and wanted only the videos (which I want to keep control of....but more of why I do later), as I was about to close it, a friend asked to take it over who has a fair old bit of experience in running 3D forums...in fact he runs one of the oldest 3D forums on the internet. Whereas up till now Autodesk have always had the ability to contact me should a user for example post something from a beta in public that wasn't supposed to be posted and ask for it to be removed, that's going to be a bit harder as the person taking it over isn't on their speed dial I think lol. Although my 1st priority was keeping the hub open if at all possible for people as long as it was under terms I agreed with. It will remain a separate forum and won't be swallowed up into any other. MudboxHub.com will be taken over by Cris Robson (no relation) from 3D-Palace.com and a team of mods. There are big plans for it... I should also point out I have not 'sold it' no money has changed hands as MudboxHub isn't 'Wayne Robson' but the user base and as such I wouldn't have felt right selling it. Even though it's worth a bit of dosh for its domain alone and I am flat broke right now lol.

About those videos.....

Just a bit of clarification really as it seems some people think I was either joking or just talking things up when I said the last batch of videos were my final freebies for Mudbox (and probably other applications as well)...I meant it. Just tonight I was asked by a good mate in 3D "Oh but your planning on doing them again thought at some point though aren't you right?". The short answer is no. It's time for others to do what I've done for Mudbox and time for me to move to one side and make a bit of room for them. Hopefully these people don't take the next year and a half just talking about it. It would be nice if some of the many people I trained started putting out things of their own as well. This does not mean I'm switching to another app, simply that I'm sick to death of being limited to the models I do as 90% of the time they'll end up either on a DVD, in an article or a bloody time-lapse or recreated live at an event or on sight teaching gig. So it'll be nice to open the floodgates a bit and tackle some far longer model times and some far more complex pieces in time. The more you teach, the less time you have for your own models and ideas. As I hit 40 yrs old in may I thought the time was right.

Plus I am also sick to death of certain people constantly backbiting... Unlike someof then I'm not a 20 something with too much testosterone. I'm a grown man with a family and funnily enough my family are far more important to me than the opinions of the user base of any application. So I'm refusing to let time with my family be eaten away by that... all be it partly my own fault for being a pig headed old bastard.

Apart from this there are a number of things outside of 3D both good and bad taking ip a lot of my time. So those have also had to be taken into consideration. But the overwhelming feeling that when you become known for a application its almost like a marriage. You get tied to it for better or for worse unless your very careful (or very lucky). So even looking at a rival application can provoke the wrath of the user base as I know from personal experience. Now as a freelance artist I don't have the luxury these days of discounting any app from my pipeline. Although I've had to for some time because the moment you get used to a new way or working it is unfair to teach people the 'old way' you used. But I still use Mudbox, certainly there will be times when I'll do entire sculpts in the future in Zbrush or another sculpting app simply to show potential clients that I can use both apps equally as well. That's not an artistic decision, it's a financial one in that being able to demonstrate equal skills in either application makes me more marketable. But yes given the choice I'd still use Mudbox every time as since about 2008 its been the application that's right for me. (I also used it when it 1st came out for a few years as well).

So to outline there's no ulterior motive to this, no one has fell out with anyone else or anything like that. I simply need to simplify my life and take it in the direction I (for once) want it to go. That's direction just isn't conducive to being tied to MudboxHub or doing a shed load of free videos.

As long as FXPHD want me to do courses I'll do them as my sole output for video tutorials outside of live events. If and when the time comes when they decide they don't need any more chances are that'll be it.

The Kill Switch:

Some of you know about this already when I've mentioned it in the past, but as I know some of you go nuts if you don't know something, and if I dont it'll only mean more bloody emails I'll outline what it is. I have always kept a very tight reign on my videos for a variety of reason.

Firstly as I don't want them ending up on some sites that are basically just places to stick a shit load of adverts. Bottom line: if I put a video out for free and am not making a penny out of it, I don't see why I should let others make anything out of them either.

I've always had on both MudboxHub and on DashDotSlash.net what I called a 'kill switch' that allowed me to remove any or all videos should I feel that they either were no longer relevant or simply portrayed my quality of work in a light that was in fact costing me work. It's as simple as that. nothing dramatic.

What inspired it was times when you come across a video by an artist from years back and realise that it bears no resemblance to how they work or the quality of their work now. A month is a long time for a artist...years are even longer. I never want it so videos recorded in 2004 turn up in 2030 for example lol. So if you're a person who records your own free tutorials, then I suggest you may want to implement the same thing. A video you love today may make you want to crawl into a small hole in a few years time lol.

So there you go , a very wordy blog that's hopefully sorted stuff out. The hub will be no longer under my control, the free Mudbox videos cow has dried up and hopefully you all understand my reasons to some degree.

I would also ask that for the love of all that's holey please stop sending me emails of Mudbox question that are A) covered in the help files you probably didn't even search through B) on Google in a simple search or C) coz' you can't be arsed to wait for Autodesk to reply to an email this very nano second.

This may sound mean but I don't have time to spend typing out complex and often lengthy answers to questions. Every time I do that I'm either not making money while I'm answering the email or not spending the time with the kids. I am not some sort of extended tech support for Mudbox users. Autodesk has a well stocked and well funded tech support department and they reply as speedily as they can. This does sounds nasty and the tone no doubt does as well. But I can't afford to spend my life answering emails as if I did I'd starve and so would my family. If I'm at a live event teaching by all means its then fair game to ask as many questions as you like.

So yes I am serious about making some major changes to my life as you can see. I'm probably the 1st person who is known as a tutor who is purposely sabotaging their own career lol. But it has to be done and there is no painless way to do it. But people always love stuff for nothing so I expect you all to have forgotten about it in a week or two ;)

Stolen Camera Gear List

Some of you will have remembered that when in Holland I got my camera bag stolen outside the railways station in Almere's Music district. Well I've finally managed to round up the whole list and provided serial numbers where I can. So keep your eye open for this stuff as none of it was insured. Oh and if you do catch the thieving bastards who stole it..... pass on a few swift hard kicks from me.
